Listed Under: How To Fix It

Once you have all of the lighting inside your home set up to enhance that space, it is time to venture outside to create a similar setting. By doing this properly you can create an additional zone to enjoy once night begins to fall upon your property. The goal is to design a garden that is as inviting to you, your family and guests at night time as it is during the daytime. Though it will require that you also put forth some good effort in landscaping with things like plants, trees and water features, great lighting focused on that landscape is a must.

This is definitely not a place that I would recommend simply winging things, or making do with whatever seems to be the easiest approach. This is a place where the effort put forth, and planning really shine through. Experts in this field will tell you that you are meant to create “layers of light” to achieve the proper balance, appearance, and atmosphere. This is prepared through the use of ambient lighting, accent lighting and task lighting. The ambient lights will beautify the space, and accent lighting will place a focus upon certain features and areas of interest, while task lighting is necessary for both security and safety.

A walkway is enriched by the insertion of path lights. These guide visitors to the garden where you want them to go, when you angle them toward the path itself. It is also a safety measure to ensure that people stick to the territory that has been prepared for travel throughout the garden, or to and from destinations. Otherwise, they may not see the edges of the walkway, or even the walkway itself at all. You took the time, and spent the money to make this path, so let the light shine down on it for all to see and use.

If you have an outdoor living area, then this is the perfect spot to get dramatic with your lighting. Manufacturers have begun to produce lighting fixtures for outdoor use that are identical in appearance to those you would find inside of a home. Items such as chandeliers bring real style and impact to a garden living area, as well as help to define the space as an outdoor room.

The options for using lights to bring your landscape to life after darkness falls are endless. Do not miss out on an exception opportunity to use lighting to design an outdoor environment that you and others will truly appreciate.

So you have finally noticed that your kids are not wrong, some of the rooms in your house are looking a bit outdates. Still, truth be known, you were almost happier being in the dark on this because you do not have the funds to make big changes. But, that is where you might just be wrong. There are certain things that can be switched out that will instantly alter the appearance, and if the right selections are made on the replacements could make all the difference.

My favourite of these instant alterations are light fixtures. Take a quick look around your house, do you have a chandelier that screams eighties, or upon closer inspection lighting shades that were originally white but now look more yellow? Then this is actually great news, because really just about anything has to be better that discoloured, or seriously dated. Even if you just change out the old shades for some cleaner looking ones you have taken a step in the right direction. But, I for one hope you decide to run all the way to the finish line on this and get some great new lights.

Dust covered wooden indoor window blinds are never something you want any guests, or mother in laws with white gloves, to see in your home. So, to avoid such embarrassing moments get those blinds cleaned up at least twice a year. You may not look forward to the task, but take comfort in the knowledge that it is not that difficult.

Wipe the wooden blinds off with a slightly damp sponge and then repeat with a totally dry sponge. Next, put a few drops of wood cleaner on another slightly damp sponge. Be cognizant of not drenching the blinds as this can lead to issues later on. The right way is to keep the blinds from ever being doused in liquid, as water on wood is not a good thing.

For many different reasons, there may come a time in which your children need to share a bedroom. Whether it be the fact that a grandparent is coming to live with the family, a new child is being born into the family, or a parent has decided to work from home, what was formerly your child’s bedroom needs to be used by someone else. And while this is a very common occurrence, it is extremely rare for the kids who are now going to share a room to be amenable to the change. This can lead to a lot of additional squabbling, complaining, and all around poor behaviour on behalf of the children. That is unless you are savvy about your approach, and put some positive spin on it that makes it all better.

No, you do not need a magic wand, but some very special new beds for the soon to be roomies might do just the trick. Some children’s beds are configured in ways that make them seem more like playgrounds than cramped areas of rest. A couple of great possibilities are the bunk bed and desk area combo, or my personal favourite the high studio sleeper. Both of them provide the inhabitants of the room a very dynamic living space, but the studio sleepers are virtually complete rooms all melded into one contraption. Thus, they are practical, cool, and will make the children feel that they have gained a neat area, instead of having lost anything. We admit, it is pretty crafty, and have known it to be the only viable form of salvation for more than one family. Note: The information regarding specific beds within this was sourced from children’s beds from Time4Sleep.co.uk for accuracy.

For decades it was said that the couch is the most important piece of furniture in the living room. As the rooms in homes have evolved, and space has become more of a premium, people can find that they really do not have the space for a full couch. This of course creates a dilemma for those who were brought up with that sofa theory.

Happily, I am here to let you know that there is no such rule from the design gods mandating that a sofa be the centrepiece of a room, or that you even have one at all. Therefore, if you would prefer to work with an arrangement of seats that does not include a couch, then feel free, and correct, to do so. In fact, four armchairs can create a very cosy seating configuration.

The pairing of four chairs is particularly well suited for placement directly in front of a fireplace. Anchor the chairs with a coordinating rug and a sturdy coffee table. This is sure to prompt hours of brilliant conversation.

So your mother in law is the queen of hosting the holidays, but this year you have become the one to carry the torch. Sure she thinks of everything, and you just do not know how you can live up to her expectations, but rest assured you can. Just use this quick list to get it all in place. Pretty soon you will be holding the title, and she will be beaming with pride over your achievement, or at least she should.

Here goes. Lay out the towels on the bed, place a basket of travel sized bath supplies on the dresser and do not forget to include a lovely display of flowers on the bedside table. Leave some reading materials on the nightstand, and make sure they are current, otherwise it seems unimportant, and you want your visitors to know you hold them in the highest regard.

Finally, make sure extra pillows and blankets are readily available, and that a small fresh container of potpourri is filling the space with a relaxing aroma. As a special touch, have your guests sign a visitors book to help solidify the experience.

So you have recently noticed that your home is lacking oomph. To instantly give your house some character pick a bold colour for your front door. From experience, you know this works, but might not have taken the initiative because you could never decide on a colour. However, if you remind yourself that it is one of the fastest ways to make a gratifying change, and certainly one of the most cost efficient ways, then you might get down to it. Think tropical colours and you will soon become the most noticed house in the neighbourhood.

Whether you call them cabinet pulls, knobs, handles or hardware, they are the best article to change for a quick revamp to an outdated look. A run to the local hardware store will provide you with plenty of inspiration, as there are hundreds of different handle colours, shapes, and themes to be found. Some say it is more economical to buy your new hardware online, but this adds risk and waiting time to the project, and fast and easy is the goal here. As such, I would stick to the instant gratification approach.

Of course you will want everything in the space to match, so if there are drawers next to the cabinets you should replace those pulls also. Before scooting to the store, count the number of knobs, or pulls you will need, and measure to see the size of the already existing ones. These two steps will save you from multiple visits to the shop and the unnecessary job of drilling new holes, and filling old holes.
