Whilst dining room furniture may well end up as a series of practical purchases, with the emphasis placed firmly on functionality rather than designer trends, creative flair can still thrive in the home. From faux leather dining chairs and glass tables through to more exotic choices, simply follow these three golden rules and start your journey towards a fresh designer dining area.

Keep it simple

Sometimes a successful interior design owes more to what is left out than to what is added. Don’t get carried away with extra accessories or furnishings. Stick to a few key pieces of furniture and make sure they work with the available floor space.

For instance, choose a solid pine dining room table and a set of tall backed matching chairs and make them the focal point of the room. With the eye drawn to the centre of the room, work outwards, ensuring enough room for each chair to be drawn back.

If possible, leave wall space clear to move chairs so that the table can also be used for buffet-style food. The wall itself may be a key feature of the room, making a statement with a section of bold print wallpaper or perhaps a large mirror.

Set the tone

Furniture can also be used to bring warmth or a sense of cool to a room. Solid and traditional oak wood can transform a room from a light and breezy space to one that is a little more cosy and intimate.

For a more contemporary look, why not lighten the room and open out the space with the clean lines and reflective qualities of a glass topped table with metal framework. Enhance your furniture choices by adding accessories in complimentary colours. Use earthy colours for a warmer tone, blues and greens for a fresh look that sits well with a lighter, brighter room.

Add comfort and style with fabric

Not all dining room furniture needs to be wooden or metal, with a number of carefully chosen pieces using cloth or leather creating a softer appearance. With faux or real leather chairs now available in range of different sizes and shapes, no room need miss out.

The use of leather ensures that comfort and style are combined, providing more than just a few options for co-ordinated accessories such as wooden or Roman Blinds, lampshades and glass fronted cabinets.

With a little planning, these three rules are simply achieved, proving that a few changes to an existing interior can work wonders when creating a fresh new look.

Once you have undertaken the activity of renovating a home, you will become a member of a group by default. Those in the club learn the things that should be done, and the things that should not be done during this process one way or another. I am of the thinking that there is no reason to identify the difference between the things best to do and those best left undone on one’s own. The information can be gained through seeking knowledge from those who have been there before you, and are more than willing to share.

Therefore, let me offer you this bit of advice on one thing you absolutely will want to do from the moment you decide to tackle a home renovation. Make a file (at the very least one that is large, plastic and with a zipper) to keep track of the ideas you have for the area you are fixing up. Put everything you do not want to forget, or misplace inside of it in order to push through the experience without wanting to pull your hair out. Well, you may encounter that elsewhere during the experience, but as for what you can control this will help to keep your sanity in tact. Put colour cards, fabric swatches, clippings from magazines, a list of important measurements, anything that will inspire and aid you in your journey. You will reach for this often so keep it on your person when you head off sight. It will enure you get the right flooring, right window frames, right appliances. Because, even with a great deal of help from others, if you are heading up this project, as the leader it is your role to keep your eye on the prize.

Bathrooms look dirty and dingy when the caulk becomes discoloured. To remove and replace the caulk will cost you under a tenner, and will make the space look like a bunch of cleaning fairies came in and worked total magic. If you are wondering what level this is considered for a DIY home improvement task I would say it is a four out of ten. Yes, it is that easy and I am embarrassed to admit that for a long time I thought it was something better left to someone else. Believe me, you can do this as long as you follow the directions that come with the new caulk.

You will need to remove the old caulk, and this will require a scraper. Sometimes once you’ve got the first end up the rest just lifts right off, but other times you will have to do more work (which is why I gave this a four for difficulty level, instead of a three). Follow this by washing the area and then allow it to dry completely. You will want to cut the tip of the tube’s opening at a forty-five degree angle, and also apply it at that angle.

As for which type of caulk to buy, I would go with one that has an anti-mold warranty for at least five years, and sets in under four hours. Or take my word for it, you will need to use that shower well before you planned to, and will not be able to do so. I expect that you will be very pleased with how much crisper your bathroom looks after having done this for it. Not to mention that is a good policy to do from time to time, as you can imagine it does more for the bathroom than just make it look nicer.

If there is one thing that I have on my short list of wants, it is a proper way to store and organise my shoes. The bedroom closet during the week often gets turned upside down, and articles of clothing, handbags, ties, socks and shoes seem to congregate on the floor, Naturally, this is not due to anything I do, this is the aftermath of my sweet counterparts frantic mornings. But, since we share a wardrobe, this means his typhoon takes down some of my possessions, and there they remain until an end of the week overhaul can be accomplished. Yuck, not the way I want to start my days off, but that is how the cookie crumbles eh. The optimum way to set up your shoes in my opinion is actually something taken straight out of a kitchen design. More commonly you will see pull out pantry shelves in near the cooking area. But, when these shelves are installed on a slight angle they become dream housing for a shoe collection.

This creates a super efficient way to protect your shoes, to see them, and to show them of if you are a shoe horse. I can’t recommend enough that you go one step further and line the shelves. The liners will not only create a lovely decorative background, and protect the shelves from whatever is carried in on the bottom of shoes, but also assists in prohibiting those kitten heels, pumps, mary janes, and stilettos from sliding when you pull the section out. Magnifique!

Well, here it is winter and many of us are stuck inside more often than not. Why not take advantage of this indoor time and learn how to do, and then do the things you know you should, but never have. Take for example seasoning cast iron pots and pans. They are excellent kitchen tools, and in some cases are the best thing you can use to gat a certain recipe just right. So, since it is considered a kitchen staple, chances are you have one and you probably know you are supposed to be maintaining it, and priming it, but you simply have not.

Let’s review what the proper maintenance and seasoning is for these hard working pieces. First off, you should know that when you first get one of these you are meant to begin the seasoning process, but better late than never one would imagine. The way to do it is wash it in hot soapy water, roughly dry it with a damp cloth and then pop it into the oven at 300 degrees to get it completely dry. Then take it out, use a small amount of oil to coat it with a paper towel and return it to the oven for a full hour. Upon removal wipe away any residual oil and leave out to cool.

After you have done the above, never ever use soap on it again. Instead, if it has food pieces on it, remove them with hot water and a brush. Once it has dried do the re-seasoning again. It sounds like some serious additional work, but it will make it seriously non-stick, and keep it happy for years.

Technological innovation means that everything is always being reinvented, coming out with newer, better versions of itself and giving us even more choice. Mattresses have certainly come a long way from straw filled pouches and taut rope beds, but just how do we know what to choose? This handy guide from Memory Foam Mattress Direct should help.

Although traditional sprung mattresses are still available, more and more people are choosing to invest in a mattress with newer òtechnologyô such as memory foam mattresses and latex mattresses. These type of mattresses have a whole host of benefits, such as being heat reactive and eliminating pressure points, being hypo allergenic and antimicrobial, and also being very comfortable to sleep on.

But it seems that descriptions of memory foam and latex mattresses seem to list the same pros and cons, so which is better and just what is the difference?

Memory foam mattresses are made from heat reactive memory foam, which moulds to your body shape, cocooning your joints. The same can be said of latex mattresses, except that they are made with a latex material, rather than memory foam. The main difference between latex and memory foam mattresses is in the way that they react to heat.

Memory foam mattresses are very mouldable, they are firmer in cooler temperatures and more pliable in the heat. But the material takes quite a long time to adapt to the heat. This can mean two things, first of all it can be hard to get comfortable when you first lie down, while you wait for the mattress to let you òsinkô in and, secondly, it can be quite hard to change positions during the night, as the mattress doesn’t spring back into shape immediately.

Latex, on the other hand, springs back much more easily than memory foam mattresses. However, latex mattresses can be very expensive when compared to traditional mattresses or even memory foam ones, which can put many people off. They are also very heavy and, if they are not made of very high quality latex, the mattress can develop lumps and bumps after a few years. This is unlike memory foam, which has a long life span and doesn’t suffer from any sagging. Memory foam also doesn’t require any turning, which is good for people who would struggle to turn over a double mattress.

As for which is better, it really is a matter of personal choice. Both latex mattresses and memory foam mattresses have many of the same benefits but, unfortunately, the decision often comes down to cost .With the increased demand for memory foam mattresses, this generally means that they are much cheaper than their latex counterparts.

Winter months can be some of the messiest ones where the home is concerned. We drag in wood, track in mud and slush, and leave it behind as we race to the fireplace to warm up. This means in due time, the cleaning tools are pulled out on multiple occasions, and then returned to where they are housed.

If you have not already created a way to sort your cleaning tools (such as mops, brooms and dusters then here’s a nifty tip. Wherever you are storing these articles hang wall hooks to corral them. This will eliminate the pile up of the wide bottoms, and their constant falling over to knock things down in their course.

I know at first you are thinking that you do not have loops to dangle the instruments on the hooks. You do not need them, just attach the hooks close enough to one another so that the wide ends are able to balance in between them. You will wish you did this ages ago.

The changing of the seasons bring more than leaves falling and temperatures dropping, it signals cleaning rituals to be implemented. For centuries the transfer from one season to another has being the indicator for certain housekeeping activities to be actioned. No need for a mark on the calendar, it is in the air.

So what is it we are meant to be doing in our homes to maintain their cleanliness, expelling dust. Summer leads us to throw open windows, track in dirt, and enter and exit more frequently than any other time. It is also notoriously the season where most homeowners neglect chores, as they would prefer to be making the most of the good weather. Fun and games now need to be put on hold, and that buildup of dust needs to be ousted. Nooks and crannies deserve a good cleaning and a fresh start to the upcoming months of indoor living. Hit everything, and everywhere that dust accumulates, ceilings, baseboards, cabinet doors, vents, corners, walls, and shelves. This way you can settle in for a long winter and know you are in properly cleaned surroundings.

When it comes to home repairs, an angle grinder is an essential tool to have. This nifty tool is used in grinding, shaping, polishing and cutting various materials using the spinning wheel. This handy appliance is also used when cleaning various types of metal surfaces and in car restorations. Landscapers also use it in shaping paving stones. It can also be used to sharpen other edged tools, thus negating the need to buy a sharpener.

Angle grinders come in many different sizes and designs. Prior to purchase, it is advisable to consider what kind of jobs you will be embarking on. Heavy-duty jobs like the cutting of cement will require you get a grinder with a powerful motor and a large grinding wheel.

This power tool allows customisation in settings and grinding wheels. For instance, if you are stripping the paint off a wall, you can switch the grinding wheel for a wire brush disc. If the job at hand is separating mortar from bricks, it is advisable to use a thick-tuck pointing or diamond wheel. There are certain wheels that will not work with certain grinders. Undertaking proper research beforehand can avoid any inconveniences.

When buying one of these power tools, look for one with a protective guard around the wheel. This directs debris and sparks away from you therefore preventing injuries. Your grinder of choice should also have a dust injection system, a dust sealed motor and bearings. These features increase the grinder’s longevity. For increased control and comfort when working, get a grinder with anti-vibration features. Also, look for a model with an adjustable side handle as this makes using it much easier.

Reading online reviews before buying this power tool will help you get the best quality for your money. Look for reviews that talk about its durability when using it for heavy jobs. Only go for a product that can withstand heavy use, even if it may be a little pricy than other models.

You must also consider convenience when looking to buy a grinder. Gravitate towards models with long power cords and rechargeable models. In the case of the latter, find out the recharge time. A durable storage case will help keep your grinder in superb condition.

Power tools are inherently dangerous so look for one with many safety features. A lock off switch is one of the most important features. You can also look for models with a quick release system and an LED warning light.

To prevent accidents, keep the grinder away from children and unauthorised personnel. Also, make sure you use all the protective equipment when using it.

Once you have all of the lighting inside your home set up to enhance that space, it is time to venture outside to create a similar setting. By doing this properly you can create an additional zone to enjoy once night begins to fall upon your property. The goal is to design a garden that is as inviting to you, your family and guests at night time as it is during the daytime. Though it will require that you also put forth some good effort in landscaping with things like plants, trees and water features, great lighting focused on that landscape is a must.

This is definitely not a place that I would recommend simply winging things, or making do with whatever seems to be the easiest approach. This is a place where the effort put forth, and planning really shine through. Experts in this field will tell you that you are meant to create “layers of light” to achieve the proper balance, appearance, and atmosphere. This is prepared through the use of ambient lighting, accent lighting and task lighting. The ambient lights will beautify the space, and accent lighting will place a focus upon certain features and areas of interest, while task lighting is necessary for both security and safety.

A walkway is enriched by the insertion of path lights. These guide visitors to the garden where you want them to go, when you angle them toward the path itself. It is also a safety measure to ensure that people stick to the territory that has been prepared for travel throughout the garden, or to and from destinations. Otherwise, they may not see the edges of the walkway, or even the walkway itself at all. You took the time, and spent the money to make this path, so let the light shine down on it for all to see and use.

If you have an outdoor living area, then this is the perfect spot to get dramatic with your lighting. Manufacturers have begun to produce lighting fixtures for outdoor use that are identical in appearance to those you would find inside of a home. Items such as chandeliers bring real style and impact to a garden living area, as well as help to define the space as an outdoor room.

The options for using lights to bring your landscape to life after darkness falls are endless. Do not miss out on an exception opportunity to use lighting to design an outdoor environment that you and others will truly appreciate.
