Keep it simple

Sometimes a successful interior design owes more to what is left out than to what is added. Don’t get carried away with extra accessories or furnishings. Stick to a few key pieces of furniture and make sure they work with the available floor space.

For instance, choose a solid pine dining room table and a set of tall backed matching chairs and make them the focal point of the room. With the eye drawn to the centre of the room, work outwards, ensuring enough room for each chair to be drawn back.

If possible, leave wall space clear to move chairs so that the table can also be used for buffet-style food. The wall itself may be a key feature of the room, making a statement with a section of bold print wallpaper or perhaps a large mirror.

Set the tone

Furniture can also be used to bring warmth or a sense of cool to a room. Solid and traditional oak wood can transform a room from a light and breezy space to one that is a little more cosy and intimate.

For a more contemporary look, why not lighten the room and open out the space with the clean lines and reflective qualities of a glass topped table with metal framework. Enhance your furniture choices by adding accessories in complimentary colours. Use earthy colours for a warmer tone, blues and greens for a fresh look that sits well with a lighter, brighter room.

Add comfort and style with fabric

Not all dining room furniture needs to be wooden or metal, with a number of carefully chosen pieces using cloth or leather creating a softer appearance. With faux or real leather chairs now available in range of different sizes and shapes, no room need miss out.

The use of leather ensures that comfort and style are combined, providing more than just a few options for co-ordinated accessories such as wooden or Roman Blinds, lampshades and glass fronted cabinets.

With a little planning, these three rules are simply achieved, proving that a few changes to an existing interior can work wonders when creating a fresh new look.

Therefore, let me offer you this bit of advice on one thing you absolutely will want to do from the moment you decide to tackle a home renovation. Make a file (at the very least one that is large, plastic and with a zipper) to keep track of the ideas you have for the area you are fixing up. Put everything you do not want to forget, or misplace inside of it in order to push through the experience without wanting to pull your hair out. Well, you may encounter that elsewhere during the experience, but as for what you can control this will help to keep your sanity in tact. Put colour cards, fabric swatches, clippings from magazines, a list of important measurements, anything that will inspire and aid you in your journey. You will reach for this often so keep it on your person when you head off sight. It will enure you get the right flooring, right window frames, right appliances. Because, even with a great deal of help from others, if you are heading up this project, as the leader it is your role to keep your eye on the prize.

You will need to remove the old caulk, and this will require a scraper. Sometimes once you’ve got the first end up the rest just lifts right off, but other times you will have to do more work (which is why I gave this a four for difficulty level, instead of a three). Follow this by washing the area and then allow it to dry completely. You will want to cut the tip of the tube’s opening at a forty-five degree angle, and also apply it at that angle.

As for which type of caulk to buy, I would go with one that has an anti-mold warranty for at least five years, and sets in under four hours. Or take my word for it, you will need to use that shower well before you planned to, and will not be able to do so. I expect that you will be very pleased with how much crisper your bathroom looks after having done this for it. Not to mention that is a good policy to do from time to time, as you can imagine it does more for the bathroom than just make it look nicer.

This creates a super efficient way to protect your shoes, to see them, and to show them of if you are a shoe horse. I can’t recommend enough that you go one step further and line the shelves. The liners will not only create a lovely decorative background, and protect the shelves from whatever is carried in on the bottom of shoes, but also assists in prohibiting those kitten heels, pumps, mary janes, and stilettos from sliding when you pull the section out. Magnifique!

Let’s review what the proper maintenance and seasoning is for these hard working pieces. First off, you should know that when you first get one of these you are meant to begin the seasoning process, but better late than never one would imagine. The way to do it is wash it in hot soapy water, roughly dry it with a damp cloth and then pop it into the oven at 300 degrees to get it completely dry. Then take it out, use a small amount of oil to coat it with a paper towel and return it to the oven for a full hour. Upon removal wipe away any residual oil and leave out to cool.

After you have done the above, never ever use soap on it again. Instead, if it has food pieces on it, remove them with hot water and a brush. Once it has dried do the re-seasoning again. It sounds like some serious additional work, but it will make it seriously non-stick, and keep it happy for years.

This is definitely not a place that I would recommend simply winging things, or making do with whatever seems to be the easiest approach. This is a place where the effort put forth, and planning really shine through. Experts in this field will tell you that you are meant to create “layers of light” to achieve the proper balance, appearance, and atmosphere. This is prepared through the use of ambient lighting, accent lighting and task lighting. The ambient lights will beautify the space, and accent lighting will place a focus upon certain features and areas of interest, while task lighting is necessary for both security and safety.

A walkway is enriched by the insertion of path lights. These guide visitors to the garden where you want them to go, when you angle them toward the path itself. It is also a safety measure to ensure that people stick to the territory that has been prepared for travel throughout the garden, or to and from destinations. Otherwise, they may not see the edges of the walkway, or even the walkway itself at all. You took the time, and spent the money to make this path, so let the light shine down on it for all to see and use.
